Rep. Miller on J.B. Pritzker's SAFE-T Act

September 15, 2022

WASHINGTON - Congresswoman Mary Miller (R-IL) released the following statement on Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker's SAFE-T Act:

“Governor J.B. Pritzker's soft-on-crime agenda has made Illinois more dangerous, and the Pritzker SAFE-T Act will make it even harder for law enforcement to protect our communities,“ Miller said. “According to the Madison County State's Attorney Thomas A. Haine, the Pritzker SAFE-T Act ends cash bail and will lead to dangerous criminals being released immediately into our neighborhoods, where they can continue to victimize innocent people. Haine said defendants charged under entire categories of serious crimes – such as second-degree murder, robbery, burglary, arson, kidnapping, and aggravated battery will be “non-detainable” while awaiting trial under the new law.

The Madison County State’s Attorney stated that on the first day the Pritzker SAFE-T Act is enacted, approximately half of the Madison County jail population will be eligible to walk out the door while cash bail is eliminated throughout Illinois.

How can Governor Pritzker argue that releasing HALF of a county's prison population in one day will not increase crime? How can he say that he cares about the law-abiding citizens of Illinois?"
